Information, advice and contacts for Cosmetic and other surgeryWeighing up the issues
A number of factors should be considered before a patient decides to elect for plastic surgery.
If you are contemplating cosmetic or plastic surgery it is important that you think carefully
about these factors before making any final decision to proceed with surgery.
Cost
Cosmetic surgery is not cheap and may cost you a lot of money.
Cosmetic surgery procedures can be complex and it costs money for the knowledge
and expertise of surgical staff who will undertake the procedures that you are wanting.
Planning for the surgery may take more than one visit and this will bring additional expense.
All of this costs money.
Financing your Surgery
Insurance companies usually will not cover the costs of cosmetic surgery.
If the surgery is associated with a medical need then it may be possible that they will contribute to the cost.
You need to have some estimate of the cost of your elective cosmetic surgery and have thought carefully about
where you will source the finance from.
Time
The whole process of your cosmetic surgery will be time consuming;
from the original visit or visits pre-surgery through the operation to the post operation recovery.
Post operative healing in particular can take some time and you should be sure that you have asked
your doctor for an estimate of this and factored this into your plans.
Recuperation
After your cosmetic surgery you will usually be advised to avoid strenuous activity,
perhaps for several weeks. You will need to avoid activities that are likely to raise your blood pressure.
Such activities may include lifting, running, bending and sex.
Surgery Risks
Like any form of surgery Cosmetic surgery has risks associated with it.
If you suffer from certain illnesses such as diabetes, heart problems, circulatory problems,
or high blood pressure you may be at higher risks of complications.
Be sure to ask your doctor for advice about any such factors.
Unwanted results
Patients sometimes have unrealistic expectations about the likely outcome of the cosmetic surgery.
Be sure you have asked exactly what improvements you should expect, whether there may be any residual
scarring and where such scarring is likely to occur. Cosmetic surgery is skilled and usually successful
but not always. Check for information about what happens if it does not work well.
Be sure you have considered this.
Can you handle it emotionally
It is not unusual for patients to have feelings of depression in the few weeks after the surgery
as they are faced with a face which may be bruised and swollen. You may begin to regret the surgery
at this time because you will not yet have seen the results but you will be experiencing some pain.
