Questions to ask your Breast Implant Surgeon

The consultation with your Surgeon:

You should have an in depth consultation with any prospective surgeon before finalising the arrangements for your breast surgery. This consultation should cover issues such as the results that you require the available options, details of the surgical procedure and , most importantly, the potential complications of Breast Augmentation surgery. You should be made aware that the exact results that you desire are never 100% guaranteed. You should ask your surgeon to show you a full range of before and after photographs of his other patients and seek permission to speak with some of his other breast augmentation patients.

The general scope of the consultation

You should be given information about anesthesia options, and be provided with exact details about where the operation will take place. All the costs associated with your surgery should be explained clearly. The surgeon should take your medical history and conduct both a general physical examination and an examination of your breasts. You should have the opportunity to ask your surgeon all the questions that you need to cover.

• How realistic are my expectations?
• Can I contact other patients and view their before and after photos.
• Where will the surgery be performed?
• How long will it take?
• What are the costs and what factors are included and not included?
• Will the breast implants be implanted below the skin or below the chest muscle?
• Where will incision scars be located and how visible will they be?
• What anesthesia will be used during the breast augmentation surgery?
• What side effects will be associated with the anesthesia?
• How much experince has the surgeon had in breast augmentation surgery?
• What percentage of the breast surgeons patients have experienced complications?
• What is the policy on correcting the procedure if the surgery is not succesfull?
• What post-operative expectations should I have? (soreness, scaring)?
• What post-operative restrictions will here be on my activity and for how long?
• Has the surgeon ever had malpractice insurance coverage denied, revoked or suspended?
• Has the surgeon taken a history of any allergies, medical conditions and medications?
