Information, advice and contacts for Cosmetic and other surgeryDetails of the Breast Augmenatation Surgery
Breast augmentation surgery generally involves making an incision,
lifting up the breast tissue and then making space to placing in it a breast implant containing
a soft implant material (i.e., saline, gel, silicone, etc).
Saline filled implants are now the most frequently used but in some circumstances for example reconstructive breast surgery, silicone breast implants may still be appropriate. There is as yet an unresolved deabte about potential risk associate with silicone implants and for that reason the circumstance in which they can be used have been restricted.
A more recent development are saline filled "adjustable" implants. These are not unlike standard saline implants but these adjustable implants have a small connector through which the size of the implants can be adjusted by injecting more/less saline. Of course access to this adjuting connector requires the surgeon to make an additional incision and therefore ther is an additional scar.
Usually the breast implant surgery incisions are in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), or in the armpit, even more recently in the area of the bellybutton. Surgeons take every care to try to minimize scaring and make any scars as inconspicuous as possible.
The implant may be placed either behind the breat tissue or underneath the muscles of the chest. The choice of implant site depends on a range of factors such as the patients own anatomy and the paticular technique favoured by the surgeon. The opration is normally over in around two hours once sutures are used to close the surgical incisions.
Typically the chest region will then be wrapped with a gauze bandage which provides support and aids healing. There may be a need in some cases to use tubes briefly which will help to drain the surgical site. Because he breast tissue is stretched in the operation it can be painful especially when implants have been placed under the chest muscle. Any pain is usually worst the first forty-eight hours following breast augmentation surgery and reduces daily. Pain medications are generally use to control pain/
Your cosmetic breast surgeon will have given you detailed instructions before the surgery that you must follow
in the run up to the breast surgery itself. This will include advice on eating, drinking, smoking, and taking or avoiding particular vitamins
and medications.
Breast augmentation surgery often takes place with the patient under general anesthesia. This means that the patient
sleeps throughout the operation. there are some surgeons though that use local anesthesia, along with a sedative, helps
relax the patient who remains awake during the operation.
